The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau 2016
The Eddie Aikau Surf Contest is probably the most prestigious big wave surf contest in the world. But it only happens when the conditions are perfect…
It was a great day at Waimea Bay. Everybody was excited to see the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Surf Contest 2016. People on Oahu and surfers all over the world went crazy! The chances that the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau was taking place in 2016 were great.
Everything has to be perfect in order for the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Surf Contest to happen; wind, waves, time frame,…
Two days prior to the event the officials gave yellow light. Meaning that the chances are good that the conditions for the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau to actually happen were good.
The Eddie Aikau Surf Contest 2016 was supposed to be the biggest event of the year
One day prior to February 10th 2016 at a press conference with the Officials, the Honolulu Mayor, Honolulu Police, Honolulu Public Transportation, Hawaii Lifeguards and everybody that even might be involved in the event of the year 2016, Keone Downing made it very clear: “The bay will call the day.”
It doesn’t matter how many people are involved in the planning, how much money has to be spend on equipment, labor or whatever, if the conditions aren’t right, the Eddie Aikau Surf Contest will not take place.
February 10th 2016 was probably the day with the most “sick” people in Hawaii. All of them were trying to get healthy as fast as possible by spending a day in the sun with drinks, live music, friends and watching the big wave surfers at Waimea Bay.
Thousands of people drove to Oahu’s North Shore the day before the event to get a good spot… or any spot. Camping on the beach was prohibited, but who needs a tent in Hawaii? People just slept on the beach on a towel or a blanket or they slept in their cars. No tents needed!
The surf report said 30 foot waves, light wind – perfect conditions for the Eddie Aikau Surf Contest. Quiksilver built a stage, lots of tents, brought all the professional surfers and made sure everything was in place to hold a memorable Surf contest in Memory of Eddie Aikau .
The day of the Eddie Aikau Surf Contest 2016
Finally, Februar 10th came and traffic on the North Shore of Oahu picked up around 3am! Yes, 3am – that’s 6 hours before the Eddie Aikau Surf contest was supposed to start. Then at around 6 am the first shocking news: The start of the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Surf Contest was pushed back to 12 pm.
People got a little nervous. Only about an hour later the shocking news: Quiksilver Officials called it off! The Eddie Aikau 2016 Surf contest was not going to happen. Ten thousands of people that made their way up to Oahu’s North Shore were disappointed. Millions of people around the world were sad that they would have to wait again, until the conditions would get better.
The Eddie Aikau Surf Contest 2016 didn’t happen.
This is what happened next…
The way people in Hawaii handled the situation was awesome. Some just went to work, others, probably the “sick” ones stayed at the beach and made the best out of a day with 20 – 25 foot waves. They watched the big wave surfers at Waimea Bay.
Local artists played on stage and made sure the crowd had a good time. The waves got bigger during the day. Around 230pm they reached about 25 foot. Not enough for the Eddie Aikau Surf contest, but enough for local big wave surfers to paddle out and have a good time.
As you can see in the Video, the weather was perfect and the waves at Waimea Bay were big . Just not big enough for the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau.
Check out the surf Video. Some great rides, mean wipeouts and great shots of Waimea Bay.
